Anime Review: Attack on Titan Season 2, Episode 10

Attack on Titan season 2, episode 10 review. (This review contains spoilers).

Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls.

– My Anime List

Episode 10 starts off with the soldiers going back to Connie’s village in order to investigate what had happened. They see the destroyed houses, yet no blood and discuss the fact that the villagers might have evacuated safely. But it wouldn’t make sense since the titans wouldn’t destroy the village if there was no one there and they couldn’t have evacuated when all the horses were still in their stables unharmed.

They find the titan on the collapsed house again, the one that looked like Connie’s mother and wonder what really had happened.

The scene changes back to Eren, Ymir, Bertholdt, and Reiner in the forest as they wait for nightfall. However the scouting troops have arrived, making Bertholdt and Reiner worried and they decide to go before night falls so they have a greater chance of escape. However, Eren throws a tantrum, wanting to know why and refusing to go with them.

Ymir is also hesitant, not wanting to leave Christa behind. Reiner promises no harm will come to Christa since she is a member of the royal family and they need her too for information.

Bertholdt questions Ymir about her titan form, and asks whether or not she remembers eating one of their comrades five years ago outside the wall. Ymir doesn’t remember, but feels sorry for it. She then reveals her past and says that she had been a titan outside the wall for 60 years.

As a child, she was an orphan until a man took her in and gave her a bed, food, and a warm place to live. The people there claimed her to be a part of the royal family and a group underground worshipped her for it, making Ymir feel special. That was then Ymir said was the first time she lied to herself.

When she got older, the group got discovered by soldiers and as a result, they were arrested and beaten up. Ymir and the others got on top of the wall and they were injected by something before they were pushed off.

This injection, I feel, was what Eren’s father also gave to Eren to make him half-human, half-titan. But from what we see in this scene, it seems like those who turned into titans by that injection, couldn’t change back to human form, as seen with Ymir who stayed in that form for 60 years.

It wasn’t until she ate someone that she was able to return back to human form. This makes me wonder if Eren had eaten someone in order to change back to human form, but doesn’t remember it.

When the flashback is over, Eren is already knocked out and they start off on their journey. The troops, however, are already pretty close and they have managed to avoid all titans along the way. They find themselves surrounded by titans as they near the forest, but push through, eager to get to Eren.

Ymir, on Bertholdt’s back, senses that Christa is nearby and with the troops and urges them to stop and turn back. They try to convince her that they will come back for Christa, but in the end, Ymir threatens to fight them if they don’t go back for her.

The scene changes to Mikasa and the others going into the forest to search for Eren. They find Ymir in titan form hanging on to the tree and try to speak to her. But she doesn’t pay attention until Christa comes flying towards her. Ymir eats Christa, much to everyone else’s surprise and runs away.

They try chasing after her, but it’s useless as she is too fast. They see another bright light and the armour titan appearing with Eren, Bertholdt, and Ymir on his back as he is running away from the forest. Hannes refuses to give up and orders everyone to chase them.

Like all the other previous episodes, this one was amazing as well. I feel like every episode is and will be amazing, and as each episode is released, the story gets more intense.

We get to know more about the character of Ymir, which was great since we never really knew her well before she changed into titan form and the focused switched to her. There was a little piece of the titan mystery also revealed, with the injection more than 60 years ago, which could tell a little about how titan came to form.

Ymir’s original village is somewhere outside of the wall, and it’s a possibility that that is where Reiner and Bertholdt are going, and it could be where all the titans are coming from. The injection was also very curious since it changed people into titans. And my theory is that the titan shifters could be some sort of mutant since they are able to change back. The ones that turned to titans are assumed that they couldn’t change back, but the moment Ymir ate a human, she was able to revert to her human form.

The question is why are they changing people into titans in the first place if it’ll just destroy humanity?

I’m excited to see what the solution to this particular puzzle is in the future.
