Attack on Titan season 2, episode 10 review. (This review contains spoilers).
Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.
After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls.

Episode 12 starts off with Mikasa and Eren facing the titan that killed their mother. All the others are fighting a losing battle against the titans, which have surrounded them as a result of Reiner throwing the titans towards their directions. Eren and Mikasa face what seems to be their death until Hannes steps in to protect them. He swears on his life that he would defeat the titan to rid his guilt of not protecting their mother all those years ago and begins to try and kill the titan in question. Eren and Mikasa watch helplessly as he puts his life on the line.
Back in the lines, Krista is trying to get back to Ymir, but is forcefully taken away by Connie and the others. They try to convince her that Ymir was lying to Krista, and that Ymir was only trying to save herself and would eventually get Krista killed.
Back to Hannes, he is losing the battle and Eren, upon seeing that Hannes was going to die, attempts to transform into his titan state in order to save his friend and kill the titan. But he doesn’t succeed and Hannes gets eaten. Hopeless, Eren and Mikasa find themselves surrounded by titans. Mikasa says her last words to him, thanking him for all the hope he had given her.
Pumped up and encouraged to keep fighting, he awakens an unknown power within him. He punches the titan in front of him and immediately, wave of some invisible force goes through the titan world. Ymir, Bertholdt, and Reiner can all feel it as they watch the titans retreat from attack everyone and go to attack the titan that had killed Hannes.
Eren ends up saving everyone on the battlefield and they manage to retreat safely without any casualties. However, Bertholdt and Reiner are suddenly attacked by titans due to Eren’s unknown power and they know that they might not survive. Ymir makes the decision to leave Krista to the others upon discovering that Eren might actually provide a life inside the walls, and proceeds to go help Bertholdt and Reiner.
At the end of the episode, we see Ymir, Reiner, and Bertholdt alive and safe. They had managed to get away from the titans and were on their way beyond the outside walls. Eren and the others survived as well, and Conny reveals the fact to Erwin that the titan that had sat on top of his house a few episodes earlier looks exactly like his mother, hinting the fact that titans might be humans.
Eren, realizing his new power, swears to protect the city inside the walls and to fix Wall Maria so that people can live in peace again. And the last scene finally shows the hairy titan and a man sitting on top of his shoulder with a smug look on his face.
I thought this was an amazing conclusion to season 2 and I loved how they gave a sniplet to what Eren’s true powers were. I was a little unsatisfied since we didn’t get all the answers to our questions, but that’s what makes it suspenseful, right?
The intensity of the episode was great and it kept me wondering what would happen next and who or what Eren really was. What was this power that he had gained and why did Bertholdt and Reiner not want Eren to have it? What was their purpose? And a hole bunch of other questions.
I just hope we won’t have to wait a long time until season 3, or I’ll just read the manga first.
